Global science company, 3M, has responded to the demand for reduced plastic pollution while optimizing social impact. In its most recent endeavor, 3M aims to enable progress in sustainability, society, and education in the Philippines.
“Sustainability is at the heart of 3M. It drives our innovations and inspires us to collaborate with various stakeholders, including nonprofits and communities, to solve global problems and improve everyday life,” says Reggie Pulumbarit, country leader of 3M Philippines Inc. and director of 3M’s Philippine Global Service Center.
According to the company, ocean-bound plastic waste continues to pose environmental, economic, and social issues for the country. Furthermore, they report that the Philippines is the world’s third-biggest contributor to plastic waste. To counteract this situation, 3M has pledged its support to the Plastic Flamingo (PLAF) waste management projects.
PLAF is a social enterprise in France launched last 2019 with a debut project in the Philippines. Its waste management projects aim to support the employment of junk shops and collection members from local communities. The organization mainly hires women personnel for its warehouse and recycling facility.
Additionally, the collected plastic is converted into eco-planks that can be used to construct emergency shelter kits for displaced Filipinos. To support these projects, 3M has given PLAF a grant of P1.2 million through its global investment arm. This grant will then provide support for efforts to increase the collection and recycling of plastic throughout the PH. Furthermore, the grant will also help with the reduction of plastic waste in oceans and improve the income from waste-picking as a livelihood.
