Known baking companies such as Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty, have mentioned that they will once again ask the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to impose a price increase on pandesal by end of August due to increased cost of raw materials and sustainable pricing. This comes after these companies have been holding off price hikes for the past two months.

Johnlu Koa, President of the Philippine Baking Industry Group (PhilBaking) “We will propose a price increase to DTI effective Aug. 30. We decided to hold off for two months in order to help consumers cope with food inflation and in support of new DTI Secretary Fred Pascual,”

In June of this year, PhilBaking had already approached then DTI Secretary, Ramon M. Lopez for increasing the suggested retail price (SRP) of Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty by ₱4 in light of rising prices of raw materials required for bread production, specifically flour. Unfortunately, this appeal to then Sec Lopez last June did not materialize.

In the last SRP Bulletin on prime commodities and necessities, the prices of these two brands stayed the same.  According to the DTI, PhilBaking has decided not to raise prices yet.

On the price hike petition of PhilBaking, they proposed that DTI increase the prices on a staggered basis, first by ₱2 and then an additional ₱2 at a later time. With this proposal, the current Pinoy Tasty loaf of 450 grams would go u to ₱42.50 from ₱38.50 while Pinoy Pandesal at 250 grams or 10 pieces per pack to ₱27.50 from ₱23.50.
