With the economy and schools reopening, research has shown that Metro Manila is the eighth worst in the world in terms of hours spent in traffic.

GoShorty, an insurance technology site conducted research and discovered that Manila has a 43% congestion level with 98 hours or more than four days lost to traffic each year.

GoShorty determined the countries with the most amount of low emissions zone schemes enacted to identify which of the cities in the world have the busiest roads.

In Europe with their Urban Access Regulations, low-emission zones are defined as “areas where the most polluting vehicles are regulated.”

“Usually this means that vehicles with higher emissions cannot enter the area. In some low emission zones, the more polluting vehicles have to pay more if they enter the low emission zone,” according to the Urban Acess Regulations website.

GoShorty has stated that they retrieved data from the TomTom Traffic Congestion Index to retrieve the congestion rates and time lost to traffic for worldwide and UK cities.

Afterward, each city was ranked on its congestion rate and used Urban Access Regulations to get countries with the most amounts of low emissions zone schemes implemented.

“A lot of people all over the world use a car for their daily commute or to run errands, it’s a source of transportation that is readily available. Yet, one of the most significant downsides is when you are unfortunately stuck in gridlocked traffic,” said the study.

“In 2020 we saw a drop in congestion and traffic, due to the pandemic. However, in 2022 we’re seeing more people going places again, returning to a form of normal. As such, there has been a worldwide rise in congestion, despite the rising cost of fuel prices.”
