The Bureau of Product Standards (BPS), under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), is thinking of possibly enacting standards for “parols” or Filipino Christmas lanterns to aid local manufacturers to manufacture globally competitive lanterns.

In a statement released by the DTI, BPI Director Neil Catajay mentioned that their target was not to regulate the parol items but to facilitate the possible export of globally competitive Filipino-made lanterns to the international community.

Director Catajay likewise mentioned that the BPS is collaborating with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for adopting the standard for the parol.

The PS Quality mark and the ICC sticker assure consumers that the items are certified safe and of quality that meets the standard of the relevant PNS.

This targeted standard for parols comes as DTI came up with the list of certified Christmas lights to inform consumers to purchase products with the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker or the Philippine Standard mark noted on their Christmas decorations for safety concerns as Christmas draws near.

In the DTI-BPS list of products under mandatory certification, Christmas lights are noted to be one of the 111 products under this list. As of November 9, 2022, the DTI-BPS has released a list of DTI-certified Christmas lights.

Recently, Director Catajay highlighted that when citizens are looking to purchase Christmas lights, the ICC sticker or the PS mark should be present to ensure that this product has gone through the BPS certification process.
