Twitter Outage Affects Users Globally

Twitter Inc suffered a major outage, with tens of thousands of users globally reporting that they could not access the social media platform and its key features.

Downdetector, a website that tracks outages through different sources such as user reports, showed more than 10,000 affected users from the United States, around 2,500 from Japan, and 2,500 from the UK during the outage peak.

However, Twitter’s status page remains to show that all its systems are operational.

During the outage, users could not log in to their Twitter accounts via desktops or laptops, as well as the mobile app and its features.

Other users shared updates and memes on Twitter regarding the disruption, using #TwitterDown as the trending hashtag. While some attempts to log in via desktop received an error message saying, “Something went wrong, but don’t fret – it’s not your fault. Let’s try again.”

Twitter CEO Elon Musk said he could still use the service, responding with a “Works for me.” tweet to a user who asked if the app was broken.

The outage follows Musk’s $44-billion takeover of Twitter, which has been marked by chaos and controversy.

In November, hundreds of Twitter employees resigned, including engineers responsible for fixing bugs and preventing service outages.

Meanwhile, other big technology firms were also hit by outages this year, including a nearly 19-hour service outage at Canada’s biggest telecom provider, Rogers Telecommunications, which shut down the banking, transport, and government access for millions.
