The Department of Energy (DOE) has partnered with Shell for a pilot project that aims to support the electric vehicle industry growth in the Philippines.
A tripartite memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed between Shell Energy Philippines Inc. (SEPH), Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. (PSPC), and the DOE, with the main objective of the pilot study of supplying renewable energy to electric vehicle charging stations (EVCs).
The main elements of the project include maintenance, operation, supply, and installation of the EVCs, verification, and monitoring of energy efficiency, performance, and savings with renewable energy utilization, and the optimization of the use of cleaner energy.
With the collaboration, the partners predict more EVC development in the future.
DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla has mentioned that “I commend PSPC and SEPH for collaborating with the DOE for this laudable undertaking – a sound testament of their resoluteness in maximizing value creation while contributing to global climate change mitigation,”
The DOE says that the gathered data from the pilot projects will be utilized for improving policies, regulations, and programs for the safe and sustainable operation and adoption of EVCs which include the use of renewable energy.
“These alternative opportunities could also position Shell at the forefront of their quest for sustainable and inclusive growth by adding a more compelling long-term vision for clean technologies and renewable energy investment into their portfolio,” added Secretary Lotilla.
According to the DOE, this agreement is in line with the targets and goals of the Philippine Energy Plan 2020 – 2040 which is geared towards the transition to clean energy technology and fuels.
