In response to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to prepare for the El Niño phenomenon, officials in San Jose del Monte (SJDM), Bulacan, are taking action to address the city’s longstanding water supply issues. Mayor Arthur Robes has also promised that the local government will implement measures to ensure a clean and adequate water supply, especially in light of the expected El Niño effects.
Additionally, President Marcos has directed the El Niño Task Force to ensure a steady water and power supply throughout the El Niño period. This directive was given during a meeting with officials from relevant agencies. The task force is also tasked with consolidating government interventions to ensure a steady supply of water and energy resources. The President emphasized the need for a massive information campaign to encourage resource conservation and timely assistance to affected areas.
The local government of SJDM, Bulacan, is also investigating complaints from the consumer advocacy group Alyansa ng Maralitang San Joseño about water supply issues affecting over 600,000 residents. These issues include unforeseeable interruptions and the high cost of water services. Mayor Arthur Robes stated that the local government would coordinate with water concessionaires to address these concerns.
Furthermore, the Provincial Government of Bulacan, through the Provincial Agriculture Office, is preparing for the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is expected to significantly impact the province’s agricultural production. Governor Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado is coordinating with local government units for the possible creation of a Provincial and Municipal El Niño Task Force. This task force will monitor the effects of El Niño and conduct communication campaigns. The governor has also called for cloud seeding operations at Angat Dam to induce rain and prevent water level decreases in the reservoir. He emphasized the importance of water and electricity conservation and is supporting Bulakenyo farmers with advice on planting drought-tolerant rice varieties and creating irrigation systems.
