DA Forecasts Uplift in Onion Production in 2024, Targets 300K MT Amid Challenges

The Department of Agriculture (DA) projects a significant increase in local onion production for 2024, with an expected volume surpassing 300,000 metric tons (MT). This upbeat forecast marks a noticeable improvement from the previous year’s production, which was recorded at over 250,000 MT, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa conveyed optimism about this year’s production, despite acknowledging the slight impact of harabas, also known as the fall armyworm, on the yield. He highlighted that the proactive measures taken by both national and local government authorities have effectively minimized the pest’s influence on the onion crops. The concerted efforts have ensured that only 8% of the total production area was affected, rendering the pest’s impact negligible.

To maintain and possibly enhance the production quality and volume, the DA underscores the significance of regular monitoring of onion farms. This vigilant approach allows for the timely identification and management of any production challenges that may arise. DA Assistant Secretary Genevieve Velicaria-Guevarra advocates for early reporting and meticulous monitoring of farm activities to ensure the health and productivity of the crops.

Further bolstering the support for onion farmers, Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) Director Glenn Panganiban announced that the DA is set to roll out a technical support program. This initiative aims to equip onion farmers and agricultural extension workers with effective tools and knowledge for optimal management of production areas.

In a move to safeguard the interests of local producers and stabilize market conditions, the DA has initiated the construction of additional storage facilities. These facilities are not limited to onions but also extend to other high-value crops, enhancing the overall infrastructure and support for the agricultural sector.

Moreover, the DA has imposed a temporary suspension of onion importation until May. This strategic decision is intended to prevent a supply glut and the consequent depression of onion prices, thereby protecting the livelihood of local farmers and ensuring a stable market for their produce.

With these comprehensive measures and a favorable production outlook, the DA is steering the agricultural sector towards a more robust and sustainable future, demonstrating a commitment to both the welfare of the farmers and the nation’s food security.
