Egg Prices Decline as Supply Surges Amidst Dwindling Demand, PEBA Reports

The Philippine Egg Board Association (PEBA) has reported a notable decrease in the farmgate prices of eggs, primarily attributed to an oversupply in the market coupled with diminishing purchasing power among consumers. The current farmgate price for medium-sized eggs ranges between P5 and P6, while small eggs are priced at P4 to P5, varying based on the farm’s location.

PEBA Chairman Gregorio San Diego shed light on the situation, stating, “The supply has slightly increased, but the significant factor is the reduction in people’s purchasing capacity, resulting in what appears to be an oversupply situation.”

The Department of Agriculture’s recent price monitoring in various markets across Metro Manila has further corroborated this trend. Retail prices for medium-sized eggs have been observed to fluctuate between 6.80 and 8.50 pesos.

In the bustling Cavite St. in Blumentritt, Manila, egg wholesalers have reported a substantial decrease of up to 20 pesos per tray in the price of eggs. The current pricing for a tray of medium-sized eggs stands at 160 pesos, with large-sized eggs at 180 pesos, and extra-large eggs at 210 pesos per tray.

This decline in egg prices reflects broader economic challenges, including reduced consumer spending power and market adjustments in response to the fluctuating supply-demand dynamics. The situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity within the poultry industry and the economy at large.
