Maynilad Allocates P2.7 Billion for Manila Pipe Revitalization

In a strategic move to enhance water efficiency and reduce losses, Maynilad Water Services Inc. has committed P2.7 billion through 2027 for significant improvements in Manila’s water infrastructure. This initiative primarily focuses on overhauling the existing pipe network and bolstering leak repair efforts to mitigate water wastage within the city.

The bulk of the investment, amounting to P2.4 billion, is earmarked for the replacement of aging pipes that constitute a critical portion of Manila’s water distribution system. An additional P190 million is designated for advanced network diagnostics and the detection of leaks, while the plan allocates P151 million for direct leak repair activities.

These efforts are part of Maynilad’s broader P16.5-billion strategy aimed at managing nonrevenue water, which includes water lost to leaks, theft, or other inefficiencies. Randolph Estrellado, Maynilad’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the historical significance of Manila’s pipe network, some of which is the oldest and was inherited from previous governmental management.

Since 2007, Maynilad has made considerable progress by replacing 701 kilometers of outdated piping across its concession area in the West Zone of the Greater Metro Manila area. Additionally, in a bid to further enhance its water loss management strategies, Maynilad has recently collaborated with Yokohama Water Co. Ltd., a leading Japanese water utility firm. This partnership aims to leverage Yokohama’s expertise in reducing nonrevenue water through a comprehensive evaluation of Maynilad’s current systems and practices.

This collaboration comes after Maynilad’s announcement of a significant reduction in nonrevenue water levels from 68 percent in 2006 to 43 percent in 2022. Despite this improvement, the company acknowledges the need for continued efforts to meet global benchmarks recommended by the World Bank, which suggest keeping nonrevenue water below 25 percent of total water production.
