Unified RFID System to Revolutionize Tollway Travel in the Philippines

The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) of the Philippines is advancing towards the full implementation of a unified radio frequency identification (RFID) system across all tollways, targeting a launch date in July. This initiative, featuring EasyTrip Services and Autosweep, is poised to streamline toll payments, allowing motorists to traverse various expressways with a single RFID sticker.

In the latest developments, the third proof of concept (POC) testing indicated promising improvements, especially with the inclusion of the Muntinlupa–Cavite Expressway (MCX) in the trials. According to TRB Executive Director Alvin Carullo, while the overall results were encouraging, there’s a need for further evaluation to ensure accurate toll charging, particularly over short distances.

This RFID interoperability project aims to consolidate toll payments into one seamless system, eliminating the need for multiple stickers and accounts for different tollway operators. Currently, EasyTrip is utilized on Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) roads, while Autosweep serves San Miguel Corp.-owned expressways.

The integration of these services is expected to enhance the travel experience significantly, reducing congestion and wait times at toll plazas. With a commitment to achieving a high accuracy rate in RFID detection and toll charging, the TRB is meticulously preparing for a smooth transition to this new system.
