Pork Prices Remain “Available, Affordable, and Accessible,” Says DA Executive

Amid concerns about pork prices reaching P420 per kilo, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has reassured consumers that more affordable options are available and urged traders not to exploit the recent typhoon.

DA’s Market Inspection

DA Undersecretary D.V. Savellano conducted inspections in several supermarkets to assess chicken and pork prices. He found that kasim (pork shoulder) was priced between P263 and P380 per kilo, while liempo (pork belly) ranged from P345 to P420 per kilo. Chicken was consistently sold at P160 per kilo.

“Available, affordable, and accessible,” Savellano emphasized, indicating that despite some high prices, there are still reasonable options for consumers.

Industry Insights from North Star Meat Merchants

North Star Meat Merchants, a major meat supplier, attributed its ability to offer cheaper products to its industry expertise and technological use. Anthony Ng, North Star president, explained, “We know when and how to order our stocks. We don’t follow price fluctuations of local and imported meat. Being in a retail-centric setting, stocks must be available day in, day out, aided by technology and our experience.”

Appeal to Traders

Savellano appealed to traders not to take advantage of the situation, particularly in light of Typhoon Aghon’s impact on agricultural products. “We are asking them not to take advantage of the situation, especially now that we’re hearing about a storm in Quezon. Some might want to take advantage. We hope they won’t.”

The DA’s proactive stance aims to ensure that pork remains accessible to all consumers without unjustified price hikes.
