DOE Aiming for Operational Nuclear Power Plants by 2032

The Department of Energy (DOE) is targeting to have commercially operational nuclear power plants in the Philippines by 2032. According to Energy Undersecretary Sharon Garin, the initial plan is to introduce 1,200 megawatts of nuclear power into the country’s energy mix, with the goal of gradually increasing this to 4,800 megawatts by 2050.

Garin, speaking at the 68th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, emphasized that 2024 is a landmark year for the Philippines as it charts its nuclear energy roadmap. This is in line with President Marcos Jr.’s mandate to establish a sustainable nuclear energy program that prioritizes safety for Filipinos and the global community.

The DOE’s nuclear energy strategy focuses on energy security, non-proliferation, and addressing climate change, poverty, and other societal challenges. Garin reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to the peaceful use of atomic energy while ensuring safety and security protocols are maintained.
