The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has earmarked nearly P1 trillion, or 15.4%, of the proposed P6.352-trillion national budget for 2025 to the education sector. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman announced that the education allocation, totaling P977.6 billion, reinforces the Marcos administration’s prioritization of education as mandated by the Constitution.
The proposed budget will fund various programs under the Department of Education (DepEd), State Universities and Colleges, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Included are programs like the School-Based Feeding Program and initiatives promoting universal access to tertiary education.
In addition to education, the 2025 National Expenditure Program also sets aside P254.378 billion for social services, including “ayuda” or cash assistance. This allocation aims to support vulnerable sectors through programs like the Department of Agriculture’s Rice Farmers Assistance, the Department of Health’s Medical Assistance for Indigent Patients, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s 4Ps program.
Budget Secretary Pangandaman stated that these allocations align with the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which aims to implement economic and social transformations to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance Filipino citizens’ capabilities.
