Kobe Bryant’s Nike Deal Comes to an End

Nike and Kobe Bryant’s estate recently had a falling out, which could bring an end to one of the longest-running sneaker lines in the industry. Bryant’s contract with Nike expired on April 13 and Bryant’s estate reportedly decided not to renew the endorsement deal. The reason remains unclear.

Bryant first signed with Adidas when he began his career in the NBA until eventually signing with Nike in 2003 where he was established as one of the brand’s icons. He would later sign a five-year extension with Nike in April 2016, which was also the month when he retired playing professionally.

“Kobe Bryant was an important part of Nike’s deep connection to consumers. He pushed us and made everyone around him better. Though our contractual relationship has ended, he remains a deeply loved member of the Nike family,” said Nike in a statement on Monday.

The Hall of Famer put out 11 different models of his signature line during his playing career. Even after his retirement in 2016, Nike continued to release Bryant’s sneakers.

Bryant died unexpectedly in a helicopter crash in January 2020 with his daughter Gianna and seven others. After his death, the prices for his sneakers skyrocketed. More than a year since his passing, Nike has released more than 10 of his signature shoes with more drops lined up for the remainder of 2021.

The latest Nike Kobe to be released was the Kobe 6 Grinch, which served as a commemoration of Bryant’s final game with the Los Angeles Lakers on April 13.

If Nike and the Bryant estate fail to reach a new agreement on a new deal, the market for Bryant’s sneakers could continue to shoot up with prices possibly reaching all-time highs.
