The Philippines must maintain policy consistency and stability to safeguard its competitiveness during politically challenging times, said Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) president Rene Almendras on Monday.
“Our competitiveness as a country is also determined by our image and reputation,” Almendras noted at the MAP Annual General Membership Meeting. “Most important to business is consistency and regularity of policy.”
Almendras’ remarks follow the ongoing political tensions involving Vice President Sara Duterte and President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Duterte recently claimed to have arranged retaliatory measures against key political figures, including Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, in the event of her assassination.
While Duterte clarified that her remarks were not threats, her comments have stirred political controversy. President Marcos responded by condemning any “criminal attempts” against him or other officials, emphasizing the need for vigilance to ensure safety and order.
Almendras underscored the importance of cultivating a positive business environment and sentiment to attract both domestic and foreign investments.
“You cannot separate sentiment from domestic and international. If there’s a group of people that needs to have positive sentiment about our country, it should be us,” Almendras said, adding that foreign investors closely monitor the country’s stability before committing resources.
He emphasized the need to assure the global business community that the Philippines remains a reliable and conducive environment for investment.
