Cost and Lack of Awareness Hinder Solar Power Adoption in the Philippines

While 82% of surveyed Filipino households expressed interest in solar power, only 20% are seriously considering installing solar panel systems, according to a recent study by Ateneo de Manila University.

Barriers to Adoption

The study identified two major factors discouraging solar power use:

  1. High Upfront Costs:
The cost of a home solar setup, which can exceed $1,700 (₱100,000), poses a significant barrier. For minimum-wage earners, this is equivalent to more than half a year’s salary, making solar technology inaccessible for many.
  2. Lack of Public Awareness:
While respondents generally understood the role of renewable energy in combating climate change, many lacked knowledge about rooftop solar panel systems (RTSPs), their benefits, and how to access reliable providers. Concerns about installation quality, maintenance, and provider trustworthiness also contributed to hesitancy.

Key Insights

The study emphasized that cost alone doesn’t fully explain the low adoption rate. Trust in providers, clear warranty policies, and perceived installation quality were equally important considerations for households.

Recommendations to Boost Adoption

To address these challenges, the study proposed:

  • Government Support: Providing subsidies, improving net metering rates, and expanding financing options to make solar power more affordable.
  • Consumer Education: Promoting awareness through community testimonials, success stories, and campaigns that highlight the long-term savings and environmental benefits of solar energy.
  • Accreditation of Providers: Building consumer confidence by accrediting trustworthy RTSP providers.

A Bright Future for Solar Power?

The Philippines’ high electricity rates make solar power a potentially attractive solution for long-term savings and environmental protection. With the right interventions, the study suggests the country could significantly increase solar power adoption and move closer to a sustainable energy future.
