The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) expressed optimism that Taiwan will extend its visa-free entry policy for Filipino travelers beyond its current expiration date of July 31, 2025.
MECO Chairperson and Resident Representative Cheloy Velicaria-Garafil shared the update during a news forum, highlighting the positive relationship between the Philippines and Taiwan.
“It’s still too early, but our relationship [with Taiwan] is good, so hopefully it will be extended,” Garafil said, mixing Filipino and English.
Taiwan’s 14-day visa-free policy for Filipinos resumed on September 29, 2022, and was initially set to expire in July 2023. Since then, it has been extended twice, with the most recent extension lasting until July 31, 2025.
Garafil noted Taiwan’s expanding economy and its openness to Filipino workers and students.
“They are inviting students—college and senior high school students—to study various courses in Taiwan because that’s what their industries need,” she said. MECO plans to launch projects in the coming months to support Filipino students seeking free education opportunities in Taiwan.
Currently, around 200,000 Filipinos reside in Taiwan, with 170,000 employed in the semiconductor, agriculture, and factory sectors.
The visa-free entry policy and educational opportunities underscore the strengthening ties between the Philippines and Taiwan, benefiting travelers, workers, and students alike.
