New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the private operator of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), has launched an investigation into reports of unfair treatment of baggage porters at the airport.
Third-Party Employment Concerns
NNIC clarified that the baggage porters are employed by a third-party service provider under a contract renewed by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) in 2022, valid for three years.
“These porters are not directly employed by NNIC, but we take these complaints seriously,” NNIC said in a statement. “As the airport operator, we have a responsibility to ensure service providers treat their employees fairly, respect their rights, and comply with labor laws.”
Commitment to Standards
The operator emphasized its goal of fostering a modern, professional, and fair work environment at NAIA, aligning with its vision of delivering efficient airport services for both personnel and travelers.
Increased Holiday Traffic
The investigation comes amid a busy holiday season, with NNIC expecting 2.296 million passengers to pass through NAIA from December 20, 2024, to January 3, 2025—representing a 10.95% increase from the same period last year.
About NNIC
The NNIC consortium, comprising San Miguel Holdings Corp., RMM Asian Logistics Inc., RLW Aviation Development Inc., and Incheon International Airport Corp., assumed control of NAIA operations on September 14, 2024.
The outcome of the investigation and any potential actions taken against the service provider remain to be seen.
