MANILA – Passengers of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) can breathe a sigh of relief as its administration has confirmed that there will be no fare increase this year, despite discussions of a possible fare hike for the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1).
MRT-3 General Manager Oscar Bongon assured commuters that no fare adjustment is planned for 2025, and possibly for the next one to two years.
“As of now, there is no petition for an MRT-3 fare hike, nor any obligation to do so, unlike private concessionaires that have contracts requiring periodic fare adjustments,” Bongon explained.
In addition to keeping fares steady, MRT-3 is working on increasing train capacity. Bongon announced that by June 2025, the railway is expected to operate four-car train sets instead of the current three-car trains.
This upgrade, made possible by the extension of the pocket track at Taft Avenue and the North Avenue turn-back facility, will increase passenger capacity by 33%, improving service for daily commuters.
While other transport systems consider fare hikes, MRT-3 remains committed to affordable and improved services for its passengers.
