Farmgate Price of Tomatoes Drops to ₱4 Per Kilo Due to Oversupply

The farmgate price of tomatoes has plummeted to as low as ₱4 to ₱5 per kilogram amid an oversupply, according to the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG).

The price drop is affecting farmers in Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, and Nueva Vizcaya, a significant decline from the earlier reported ₱40 per kilo in February and the ₱300 per kilo price tag in January.

Call for Government Action

SINAG is urging the government to set a floor price for tomatoes to prevent further losses for farmers. The group is also encouraging cooperatives, institutional buyers, and businesses to purchase tomatoes at ₱10 per kilo to help farmers at least break even.
