Metro Manila Subway’s Bulk Supply Substation Breaks Ground in Valenzuela

Transportation officials and project partners held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday for Bulk Supply Substation 1, a key infrastructure component of the long-awaited Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP).

Located in Valenzuela City, the two-story substation will house two transformers and be connected to Meralco’s switching station. This facility will provide critical energy support for the P488.48-billion subway system—dubbed the “Project of the Century.”

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian, and representatives from Mitsubishi Corporation attended the ceremony, marking another step forward in the long-delayed project.

Initially slated for partial operations in 2021, the subway is now projected to begin limited service by 2028, with full operations expected between 2030 and 2031, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The 17-station route will run from Valenzuela to Bicutan, with stops at key locations including North Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, and NAIA Terminal 3. Once completed, it aims to slash the travel time between Quezon City and NAIA from 70 to just 35 minutes.
