DA Eyes More Areas for P20/Kilo Rice Ahead of 2026 Nationwide Launch

The Department of Agriculture (DA) plans to expand the availability of P20-per-kilo rice to more areas across the country, aiming for a full nationwide release by January 1, 2026.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said nearly 80 KADIWA Centers are currently offering the low-cost rice, with expansion underway in provinces such as Cebu, Bacolod, Siquijor, Bohol, and Camarines Sur. Locations in Metro Manila, including San Juan and Navotas, are also set to follow soon.

This initiative fulfills a key campaign promise of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and began its pilot rollout in May. Under the program, rice is procured by the government from the National Food Authority (NFA) at P33 per kilo and sold at P20 per kilo, with the P13 subsidy split between the national and local governments.

While logistical limitations like transport and manpower still pose challenges, Tiu Laurel assured the public that rice supply is sufficient.

He also emphasized the need to amend the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL), which currently limits NFA’s ability to sell rice directly to consumers. The continuation of the program is tied to a food security emergency declaration, which could be lifted at any time.

DA data shows commercial rice in Metro Manila markets ranges from P38.17 to P57.73 per kilo as of June 4, 2025.
