17 Mayors of Metro Manila have unanimously agreed to place NCR region under GCQ. Their recommendation is set to be submitted and approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), according to Jose Arturo Garcia, the Metro Manila Development General Manager. The announcement was made in a virtual press conference shortly after the Metro Manila Council (MMC) meeting on May 26, Tuesday.

The local governments are pushing to shift from Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) to General Enhanced Community Quarantine (GECQ) by June 1.

“Definitely we will follow,” says Garcia, if the IATF chooses to reject the shift to GCQ, and instead extends the MECQ guidelines for Metro Manila.

Garcia said that under recommendation of the MMC, the GCQ will have operations of buses and jeepneys to remain suspended amidst health concerns. Although he mentioned transport services such as tricycles, taxis, and point-to-point buses will be made available to the public.

Garcia also stated each mayors still maintains the authority to impose lockdown in their respective barangays, depending on the number of confirmed COVID cases.
