First Gen to Energize 13 Mount Grace Hospitals with Renewable Energy

MAKATI CITY, Philippines — In a major step toward “greening” the Philippine healthcare sector, First Gen Corporation, the clean energy arm of the Lopez Group, has signed a milestone agreement to supply 100% renewable energy to 13 hospitals under the Mount Grace Hospitals, Inc. (MGHI) network. The partnership highlights a growing trend among critical infrastructure providers to insulate themselves from the “diesel double whammy”—the volatile surge in fossil fuel prices exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Under the multi-year deal, First Gen will provide carbon-free electricity sourced from its diversified portfolio of geothermal, wind, and solar assets. This transition is expected to significantly reduce the operational carbon footprint of the Mount Grace network, which includes prominent medical facilities across Metro Manila and key provincial hubs.

“Healthcare is an energy-intensive industry that requires 24/7 reliability,” a First Gen representative stated during the ceremonial signing. “By switching to renewable energy, Mount Grace is not only choosing a more sustainable path but also securing a more stable cost structure. In an era where the Peso has slid beyond ₱60 vs $1, decoupling from imported fuel is a strategic necessity for institutional stability.”

The “Green Hospital” initiative focuses on several operational and environmental goals:

  • Energy Cost Predictability: By tapping into indigenous renewable sources, the hospitals can better manage their long-term utility expenses, shielding patient care costs from international oil market fluctuations.
  • Geothermal Reliability: A significant portion of the supply will come from Energy Development Corporation (EDC), First Gen’s geothermal subsidiary, which provides “baseload” renewable energy—ensuring the continuous power needed for life-support systems and cold-chain vaccine storage.
  • Healthcare Sustainability Standards: The move aligns with the global “Green Health” movement, where medical institutions aim to “do no harm” to the environment while treating patients.
  • Support for National Decarbonization: The partnership contributes to the Philippines’ goal of increasing the renewable energy share in the generation mix to 35% by 2030.

The agreement follows the successful ₱10-billion bond issuance by Rockwell Land (another Lopez-led firm) and coincides with the government’s push for solar-powered irrigation and other green infrastructure. While regulators have recently flagged concentration risk in the broader financial system, analysts view the First Gen-Mount Grace deal as a “low-risk, high-impact” synergy that strengthens both the energy and healthcare sectors.

As the second quarter of 2026 approaches and the Amihan (Northeast Monsoon) fades into a hot dry season, the demand for cooling in hospitals is expected to peak. First Gen’s “RE100” solution provides a timely buffer against potential grid instability, similar to the ₱1.8-billion Isabela Solar Park currently bolstering the northern Luzon grid.

With the House of Representatives continuing to push for energy subsidies during the current recess, the private sector’s shift toward self-sustaining, renewable models is seen as a vital component of national resilience. For the thousands of patients and healthcare workers in the Mount Grace network, the transition ensures that world-class medical care is powered by the clean, indigenous energy of the Philippines.
