Prime Infrastructure Holdings Corp. (Prime Infra) announced on Wednesday the creation of a new subsidiary, WasteFuel Philippines, for its waste-to-fuel project that is being developed in partnership with US-based WasteFuel Global.
The company is currently evaluating the feasibility of establishing a biorefinery in Luzon that could convert over 1 million tons of municipal waste into 30 million gallons of low-carbon synthetic crude oil (syncrude) annually. It is targeted to be operational by 2025 and will produce fuels that burn up to 80% less carbon emissions than fossil-fuel-based aviation fuels.
“The Philippines’ capital region alone generates around 10,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day, equivalent to the weight of approximately 17 Airbus A380 planes. At WasteFuel Philippines, our goal is to turn waste into a valuable source of clean energy, thus improving waste management processes and reducing carbon emissions from transportation,” said Guillaume Lucci, Prime Infra President.
Trevor Neilson, chairman and chief executive officer of WasteFuel Global, said the project will help solve municipal waste problems and minimize methane emissions from landfills.
“This is addressing sustainability in a whole different way and creates a profound social and environmental impact,” said Neilson.
NetJets, the American private jet company, has committed to purchase a minimum of 100 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel from WasteFuel over the next 10 years.
Prime Infra is the infrastructure arm of Enrique Razon Jr. and is focused on providing reliable, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure to help build better lives and more resilient economies. Its assets currently include renewable and sustainable energy, water, and construction, but aims to expand further to other industries in the near future.
