Rising Filipino tennis star Alex Eala and Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva captured the French Open girl’s doubles title Saturday.
“Sa lahat ng Pinoy na nanood, maraming salamat sa suporta (To all the Filipinos watching, thank you very much for the support). It’s actually Independence Day today so I hope that I made my contribution to the country,” said Eala
Eala and Selekhmeteva won after knocking off Maria Bondarenko of Russia and Amarissa Klara Toth of Hungary, 6-0, 7-5, in the final.
Eala and Selekhmeteva were eliminated in the first round and semifinals of the girls’ singles play, respectively but were the doubles play’s top-seeded tandem.
This is Eala’s second Grand Slam title after winning the Australian Open girl’s doubles last year with Indonesian Madelyn Nugroho. She is currently the ITF Juniors No. 3.
Selekhmeteva, the world No. 10, has also bagged her second junior’s Grand Slam title after teaming up with Latvian Kamilla Bartone in their US Open win in 2019.
