Globe Becomes First PH Firm to Join the Race to Zero Global Campaign

Globe PH recently became the first and only Philippine company to take part in the Race to Zero global campaign by committing to the Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi), which was launched by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2020.

The prominent telco firm has persistently expressed its pledge to attaining science-based targets and net-zero emissions by 2050 in conjunction with the country’s Paris Agreement goals.

The Race to Zero campaign aims to encourage non-state actors to take significant actions that will substantially lessen global emissions by 2030 leading up to a carbon-free world in 2050. These non-state actors include companies, cities, regions, financial and educational institutions.

“We recognize the critical need to take action now to counter climate change. The imminent crisis is already threatening people, businesses, and economies worldwide. Companies like ours have a vital role to play, utilizing innovations, technologies, and expertise to decarbonize our operations and serve as a guidepost for other organizations to follow,” explained Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu.

Globe has been making relevant strides to become more sustainable in recent years. It has since shifted from acquiring energy from power plants to producing its own renewable energy. Likewise, its wide array of sustainability programs from better waste management to cashless transactions have also proven to make their operations more efficient.

“Business as usual is no longer an option. Setting and working towards science-based targets will help protect our consumers and us against future disruptions. The zero-carbon transformation of Globe’s business is already unlocking many economic opportunities, enhancing competitiveness, creating jobs, and sustainable growth. Doing good makes good business sense,” added Cu.
