Converge ICT Solutions, one of the country’s emerging internet service providers (ISP), is looking to significantly improve download speed for consumers and get set to accommodate next-generation technologies by doubling its data transmission capacity.

On Tuesday, the company expressed its plans to the Philippine Stock Exchange of increasing its metro backbone’s capacity for data transfer from 400 Gigabits per second (Gbps) to 800 Gbps.

No definite cost was disclosed to be allotted for the enhancement. Just last year, however, Converge planned to invest ₱33 billion for the expansion of its backbone. This announcement came after the firm was able to raise ₱29.1 billion when it went public.

“We want to respond to the high-capacity needs of our network and customers, and to be able to accommodate any new-generation technologies they may have,” said CEO Dennis Uy.

Their metro backbone effectively manages data transfer by integrating multiple networks. Minimal to zero delays will be experienced by users once transmission capacity has been upgraded.

Chief Operating Officer Jesus Romero further points out that the improvements would be “enough” for Converge subscribers to download a high-resolution video game and 20 HD movies in one second.

“At the same time, this latest technology allows us to use less hardware to efficiently deliver our services, limits the possibility of congestion whether in normal or outage situations, and reduces our energy consumption and cost,” added Romero.

Converge has set its eyes on covering 55% of total households in the Philippines by 2025. It is also slowly becoming an impressive competitor against dominant ISPs Globe and PLDT-Smart.

At the end of the first quarter, the company has already reached 7 million homes equating to 28% of the country’s total household. Over the previous year, it was also able to record ₱3.4 billion in net profits, going up 74% year-on-year.

After plans for the upgrade were made, Converge shares were lifted by 0.89% and finished at ₱22.75 apiece.
