NFTs to be featured in this years Venice Biennale as part of Cameroon’s exhibit

The Venice Biennale will officially include non-fungible tokens in this year’s art exhibition. As part of its national pavilion, Cameroon will feature a crypto-art exhibition.

Cameroon’s pavilion will encompass two shos across two locations, the Liceo Artistico Statale Michelangelo Guggenheim and Palazzo Ca’ Bernardo. While the former will display traditional art pieces, the latter will host an NFT show organized by Global Crypto Art DAO. DAO is a newly formed collective that aims to support artists entering the crypto world.

The crypto segment will feature over 20 artists from countries including China, Germany, and the United States. However, Cameroonian artists will not be showcased in this portion of the pavilion.

The pavilion titled “The Times of the Chimera” will be curated by Paul Emmanuel Loga Mahop and Sandro Orlandi Stagl. Furthermore, it is to be commissioned by Armand Abanda Maye, a director of art promotion in Cameroon’s Ministry of Arts and Culture.

Organizers have stated that this idea to showcase international artists with Cameroonian artists evolved from a desire to create a dialogue in light of Africa’s complex history.

“Cameroon is a country that is striving to get out of the current internal divisions, where, after the end of Colonialism, first German, then English and French, it is experiencing a phase of strong tensions, especially between Anglophone and Francophone areas,” Stagl, the co-curator, wrote in a statement.

NFT artist Shavonne Wong notes that NFTs’ presence at the Venice Biennale represents an important validation for the medium. “Digital art within the context of NFTs still has yet to find a place in the fine art world. So it’s incredible to see it being accepted on a stage like the Venice Biennale,” said Wong.
