Entry of Satellite Technology Expected to Boost Philippines’ Digital Connectivity

Major telco company Globe Telecom recently signed a memorandum of agreement with AST SpaceMobile Inc. in hopes of bringing a satellite broadband service in the country. AST SpaceMobile Inc. is currently developing the world’s first “space-based” cellular broadband network.

The agreement between the two firms aims to “explore further expansion of services across the Philippines using cutting-edge satellite technology.” Additionally, Globe affirmed that the partnership will enable them to cover areas beyond the reach of land-based cell towers offering voice, video, data, and internet access via 2G, 4G/LTE, and 5G signals.

“Globe has always been a pioneer in bringing first-to-market digital solutions to empower Filipinos. This collaboration is another step in Globe’s continuing initiatives to provide digital connectivity to remote rural communities,” explained Globe Network Strategy and Technology Enablement Director Gerhard Tan.

“Space-based broadband also known as the Global Mobile Personal Communications Services, or GMPCS, is the new frontier in connectivity,” added Tan. This innovative technology serves as an important component in provide connectivity across the country, particularly in times of crisis and emergencies. Globe had earlier noted that ₱89 billion had already been allocated for its capital expenditures this year.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), on the other hand, said that Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) is likewise targeting to launch the first gateway — the facility that supplies the internet service as it connects to Starlink — for its satellites in the Philippines before President Rodrigo Duterte steps down from office in June.

“SpaceX is setting up a business entity that will provide internet service through low earth orbit (LEO) satellites and is targeting to launch the first gateway for their satellites before the end of the term of President Duterte,” stated the DTI. The company is already registering and securing permits from relevant government agencies, according to SpaceX Government Affairs Senior Manager Rebecca Hunter.
