China’s sex toy market is currently valued at $14.7 billion according to Chinese research firm iiMedia, because of changing social values and the significance of isolation during the pandemic.

Queries for the word “sex toy” in Baidu, a widely popular search engine in China, surged between January and June according to Steffi Noel, an analyst at market research firm Daxue Consulting.

Noel said “The people who bought (sex toys) during the pandemic were mainly first-time buyers,” and for most of them this will be a one-time purchase.

China currently produces 70% of global exports of sex toys, Daxue Consulting said in a report in March.

Majority of the orders come from France, Italy, and the USA, mainly being vibrators and sex dolls.

AliExpress said in the first half of 2020, exports for sex products jumped by 50% year-on-year.

“We export more than 1,000 lifelike sex dolls per month… we’ve reached full production capacity,” said Feng, a manager at Shengyi Adult Products Co.

The United States, Germany and Japan are major destinations for dolls which go for nearly $300 each.
