As Typhoon “Bising” (Surigae) made landfall, it ravaged the eastern regions of the country bringing damage to the crop sector worth at least ₱45.93 million, explained the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday.

The typhoon, which devastated the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas, severely disrupted 765 farmers, 1,599 hectares of agricultural areas, and 3,009 metric tons of production, said the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center (DRRM-OpCen) based on initial reports.

“Affected commodities include rice, corn, assorted vegetables & fruits and livestock,” the DA-DRRM-OpCen added. The figures presented are still subject to validation, it said.

The DA was able to issue an early advisory prior to the entry of Typhoon Bising allowing Regions V, VIII, and XIII to harvest 14,589 hectares of rice with an equivalent production of 59,543 metric tons amounting to P1.08 billion even in the face of losses.

Meanwhile, Regions V and VII harvested 534 hectares of corn with an equivalent production of 1,411 metric tons amounting to P18.20 million, said the DA-DRRM-OpCen.

“The DA-DRRM Operations Center will continuously provide updates regarding TY ‘Bising’,” said the agency.
