A study testing 131 brands of honey by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) have found that at least 3 of 4 brands sold in the Philippines are not pure or are entirely fake.
The suspect honey products were found to be nearly entirely made of low-cost syrups from sugar and corn, using the internal standard stable carbon isotope ratio analysis (Iscira).
57 of the brands were store bought and the remaining 74 were bought from online platforms.
41 of the 57 from physical stores, all of which were labeled imported, were found to be authentic. Of the remaining 16, 12 were found to be mixed with sugars and were made in the Phiippines.
64 of the 74 bought online, all labeled made in the Philippines, were found to be mixed with sugars.
In total, 62 out of the 76 honey brands that are made in the Philippines, purchased both physically and online, were found to be 95% sugar syrup.
