Benguet Farmers Forced to Dump Vegetables Due to Low Market Prices

In Tublay, Benguet, farmers recently dumped hundreds of cabbages by the roadside at Kilometer 21 due to disappointingly low sales at the market. The low wholesale prices at the Benguet AgriPinoy Trading Center have greatly affected these farmers. As a result, passersby were allowed to take a few pieces of cabbage from the pile for free.

Additionally, a truckload of radishes initially bound for Atok was given away for free as no buyers showed interest in purchasing them. The price per kilo of cabbage varied from P3 to P15, depending on the quality, while radish was priced between P5 to P18 wholesale. The mayor of La Trinidad indicated that there was no oversupply of vegetables in the province, suggesting that the issue lies with low buyer demand in Manila and other areas, rather than an overabundance of produce.
