Bicol Experiences Soaring Rice Prices Amid Calls for Government Action

Rice prices in the Bicol region have skyrocketed, reaching between P60 and P75 per kilo in certain stores, as reported by a consumer advocacy group. This surge is particularly alarming considering that Mindoro, a rice-producing province, has witnessed rice prices ranging from P58 to P60 per kilo, according to Bantay Bigas.

Cathy Estavillo from Bantay Bigas expressed frustration over the government’s assurances of sufficient stock and increased production, which seem to contrast starkly with the reality of persistently high rice prices. The expectation was for prices to decrease due to higher domestic production and importation, yet the prices have not just remained high but have surged even further.

Despite the government’s previous initiatives, such as establishing more post-harvest facilities to alleviate the situation, Estavillo criticizes the lack of effective measures to address the core issues leading to continuous food shortages.

In response to these concerns, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers through the provision of seeds, irrigation, and machinery, aiming to enhance rice production. DA Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa emphasized the department’s mandate to boost farm productivity and increase local palay production.

However, looming threats like the potential impact of El Nino are expected to hamper palay production this year. The DA is actively working on contingency plans, including discussions with Vietnam regarding a five-year framework agreement for rice supply. Additionally, efforts are being made to diversify the sources of rice imports beyond Vietnam, signaling a proactive approach to securing sufficient rice supply amidst the challenges.
