MANILA, Philippines — The Blockchain Council of the Philippines welcomed entrepreneur and philanthropist Brian Poe-Llamanzares to their list of council members who will collaborate to make the Philippines “the blockchain capital of Asia.”
The founding council was announced on November 18 during a press conference for Philippine Blockchain Week (PBW) that featured intellectual talks on decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and the metaverse.
The members include representatives from all facets of the Philippine Web3 business including RCBC Executive Vice President and FinTech Alliance Lito Villanueva, PruLife UK Director and FinTech Alliance trustee Ida Tiongson, and tech lawyer Mark Gorriceta.
The newly formed council will work with government agencies and regulators to foster greater understanding between state actors and the industry.
They will also focus heavily on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) education in the nation to ensure a strong talent pool for this sector. The organization hopes to accomplish this by teaming up with educational institutions to distribute credentials for DLT-related courses.
Poe-Llamanzares, Co-founder of Artifract.io, a platform that democratizes fine arts ownership, is ecstatic about the team-up, which he hopes will result in Web3 creating more employment opportunities for Filipinos.
“Understanding Web3 and how it can translate to more job opportunities for Filipinos is important. I believe the Blockchain Council is a good initiative to make sure that we are progressing responsibly without constricting commercial growth and opportunity.”
Usec. Anna Mae Lamentillo of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) intends to give more information to Filipinos on the blockchain, which, according to her, would improve cybersecurity and even internet connectivity.
“There could be hesitancy because of the lack of understanding about this technology, but this can be addressed by an information and education campaign to encourage more people, agencies, and organizations to look into its benefits and viability,” Lamentillo said.
The PBW was thrilled to announce the success of launching their event which allowed them to educate people from all walks of life about the benefits of blockchain technology.
Donald Lim, Lead Convenor of Philippine Blockchain Week, emphasized openness in collaborating with different agencies and organizations to help champion the country in the Web3 space starting in Asia.
“The mission of PBW brought us all together, and the vision of PBW will bring all of us forward, as we realized that it is bigger than all of us, to put the Philippines on the map as the blockchain capital of Asia. We welcome all government officials, sponsors, communities, and all other stakeholders who are here to work together and make that vision a reality.”
