Burger King announced on Tuesday that select restaurants in 5 cities in the United States – New York, Portland, Miami, Los Angeles, and Austin would be serving beef with “reduced methane emissions”. Methane is a known green house gas that contributes to global warming.

By adding 100 grams of lemongrass in a cow’s diet late in its life cycle, initial studies show that there was a 33% reduction on in methane emissions from cows on the green diet in the last few months of their lives.

Fernando Machado, chief global marketing officer of Burger King, said “At Burger King, we believe that delicious, affordable, and convenient meals can also be sustainable.”

Machado added “If the whole industry, from farmers, meat suppliers, and other brands join us, we can increase scale and collectively help reduce methane emissions that affect climate change.”

The company said that it hopes to inspire other groups in the industry to make similar moves and share their findings publicly.
