Sharing the same interest in food and cooking, the Cafirma sisters established their own cafe located near the Bacarra National Comprehensive High School in their hometown of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte.
Established in 2016, the millennial-focused Thick and Thin cafe specializes in doughnuts but also has a selection of healthy bread and pastries available upon request.
Elizsa (30) is a graduate of Entrepreneurship at the Saint Louis University (SLU) in Baguio City and a licensed teacher. Elize (23) and Edel (27) are graduates in Human Resource Management and Psychology at SLU. All three hold NC II certificates in Bread and Pastry.
Before she made up her mind to go full-time in business with the help of her sisters, Elisza first worked at the Sarrat National High School but only served there for four years.
Her sisters eventually followed suit and led to the birth of another Thick and Thin Cafe, which recently opened at the government-owned La Tabacalera Food Park in Laoag City.
As part of the economic recovery plan of the Ilocos Norte government, Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc initiated the launch of the open food park, inviting promising small businesses like Thick and Thin to reach out to more customers during COVID-19.
With a total of 10 staff and supportive parents backing the Cafirma sisters, Elizsa said they will continue to improve their baking skills and aspire to establish more branches in the province.
When asked what helps their business stay afloat amid the pandemic, Elizsa said it is in loving what they do that makes the rollercoaster ride worth it and that they can outgrow all the challenges that come along in running a business, given their early start.
“Our customers are at the heart of what we do. Without you, we would cease to exist. It will always be a pleasure to serve you,” Elizsa remarked.
