Ottawa – Canada has imposed 25% tariffs on C$30 billion ($22.2 billion) worth of U.S. imports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump enacted tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods.
“There is absolutely no justification or need whatsoever for these tariffs today,” Trudeau said, vowing to challenge the U.S. measures through the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
🔹 Immediate 25% tariffs on C$30 billion of U.S. goods, affecting key products.
🔹 Further escalation in 21 days: If Trump doesn’t lift the tariffs, Canada will expand its tariffs to cover an additional C$125 billion ($92.7 billion) of U.S. imports.
📉 Stock markets slide as investors brace for a prolonged U.S.-Canada trade war.
📢 Industries affected include agriculture, manufacturing, and consumer goods.
🏛 Legal battle brewing as Canada prepares to fight the tariffs at the WTO and USMCA courts.
With Mexico also planning countermeasures, North America’s deeply integrated supply chains are now at risk of major disruptions.
