Consumers Call for More P20 Rice Stocks as Supplies Quickly Run Out Amid Long Lines

Frustrated consumers in Metro Manila are calling on the government to boost the supply of P20-per-kilo rice after stocks quickly ran out at several Kadiwa Centers amid long queues.

According to a report by GMA’s “24 Oras,” residents, including many senior citizens, flocked to Navotas City Hall early to avail of the government-subsidized rice. However, with only 50 sacks delivered, not everyone in line was able to buy.

“It’s exhausting to wait for hours and go home empty-handed,” said one resident, Myrna Roque. Another, Fely Ong, added, “I couldn’t even finish my household chores. I hope they increase the supply.”

Kadiwa Center managers in Navotas and Valenzuela confirmed the overwhelming demand. In Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela, 56 sacks were gone by 6:30 a.m.

To manage the crowd, buyers are limited to five kilos each and given numbers based on available stocks. Those who arrive late often leave empty-handed.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) acknowledged the issue and said it’s working on improving the logistics and staffing at 250 Kadiwa Centers. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the solution lies in fund reallocation and speeding up the hiring process.

The DA is also studying the possibility of expanding the rice subsidy program to cover more low-income households beyond its current beneficiaries — senior citizens, solo parents, PWDs, and 4Ps members.
