The Department of Agriculture (DA) is exploring the possibility of ending the use of “premium” and “special” labels on rice sold in markets. This move aims to address concerns about misleading pricing, particularly for imported rice.
Agriculture Secretary Francis Tiu Laurel raised the issue after observing imported rice being sold at prices higher than appropriate during market rounds.
“It is usually labeled as premium or special, but if you look closely, the rice belongs to another price level,” DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa explained. “This is why the secretary came up with the idea of removing the premium or special label.”
The DA plans to consult wholesalers and retailers to ensure a smooth transition if the proposal is implemented.
Retailers expressed mixed reactions to the potential change:
The DA is preparing a statement to clarify its position on the matter in the coming days. The agency’s efforts align with ongoing initiatives to ensure fair pricing and transparency in the rice market.
