The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to build more water impounding facilities as part of a strategic response to the ongoing El Niño phenomenon. This initiative was confirmed by DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., who emphasized the urgency of addressing the effects of El Niño, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s meetings with the Cabinet in December on the matter.
Laurel highlighted two key interventions: the creation of additional water impounding areas and the installation of solar-powered irrigation systems in selected regions. These efforts are aimed at mitigating the impact of El Niño, which was declared in July 2023 by PAGASA, the Philippine weather agency. A “strong” El Niño is currently affecting the country and is expected to continue until February.
President Marcos has urged the completion of water supply projects as a priority to combat the challenges posed by El Niño. This proactive approach by the DA and the government underscores the commitment to ensuring agricultural stability and water resource management in the face of environmental changes.
