Davao City, in partnership with the National Museum of the Philippines, is set to unveil a unique durian-inspired museum, symbolizing the fruit’s significance to the region’s history and economy.
The museum, expected to be named the National Museum of the Philippines in Davao City, will feature a wide array of artworks, artifacts, and specimens crucial to local and national histories. This five-story infrastructure, located at People’s Park in Davao City, represents the first component museum of the National Museum in Southeastern Mindanao and the fourth in Mindanao.
The museum, funded by the National Museum of the Philippines and the Office of the President, is slated to open in early 2024. The museum’s design reflects the growing international demand for durians, especially in China, where the fruit symbolizes wealth and prosperity.
The Philippines has recently begun exporting fresh durian to China, with Davao’s “Golden Puyat” variety being a highlight, and this initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs.
