“Demand for travel is now stronger than ever,” World Travel & Tourism Council president and CEO Julia Simpson. The latest report by WTTC and Trip.com Group, with Deloitte, showed that 69% of consumers actively seek sustainable travel options.
Travelers have included sustainability in their travel agenda in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint and support sustainable tourism.
Around 60% of travelers have chosen more sustainable travel options while other travelers said they are willing to pay extra for more sustainable trips or are considering traveling more sustainably in the future.
“The Asia-Pacific Region, with its rapidly growing middle-class and dynamic economies, is well-positioned to capitalize on the growth of the industry and take its place as a leader in the global tourism economy,” Trip.com Group CEO Jane Sun said.
“I’m optimistic about the positive momentum for the global resumption and growth travel in 2023, primarily driven by mainland Chinese consumers, which will help accelerate worldwide recovery and development,” Sun said.
In 2022, travelers showed eagerness to go places with a 109% increase in international overnight arrivals, with U.S. tourists leading the list as big spenders.
Despite worries about the high inflation rate and cost of goods, travelers aid they plan to do more international travel this year. According to Deloitte’s ‘Global State of the Consumer Tracker’, 53% of global consumers plan to stay in a hotel during the summer season.
“Sustainability is top of travelers’ agenda, and consumers highlight the value they put on protecting nature and traveling responsibly,” she said.
Around 60% of travelers have already started paying to offset their carbon emissions or considering if the price was right.
