The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed optimism about the revival and continued discussions of the Philippines-European Union Free Trade Agreement (PH-EU FTA), emphasizing its potential for widespread benefits. This enthusiasm came to light following the announcement on March 18 that negotiations were back on track, a development linked to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s recent diplomatic visits to Germany and the Czech Republic.
During his European tour, President Marcos underlined the PH-EU FTA’s critical role in fostering economic stability, sustainable development, and mutual prosperity, not only for the Philippines but across the Indo-Pacific region. The DFA acknowledged the progress made with the European Commission, highlighting the fruitful preliminary discussions between Philippine and EU experts from September to December 2023.
In Prague, President Marcos solicited backing from the Czech Republic for the FTA talks, echoing his earlier requests for support at the Philippine-German Business Forum in Berlin. The DFA’s statement reflects a strong commitment to achieving a balanced and modern trade deal with the EU, underscoring its importance for the country’s future economic trajectory.
