Disney announced that 28,000 employees, 2/3 of which are part-time staff, from its United States parks and experiences division will be removed due to decreased demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. said “Over the past several months, we’ve been forced to make a number of necessary adjustments to our business, and as difficult as this decision is today, we believe that the steps we are taking will enable us to emerge a more effective and efficient operation when we return to normal,”
This decision follows a $4.7 billion dollar loss in the most recent quarter due to the hit to the conglomerate’s theme park business and the postponement of major movie releases.
