Dito Telecommunity Corp.’s coverage is expected to reach more than half of the country’s cities and municipalities this year. Along with this, the telco hopes that its subscriber base will follow suit and grow substantially.
Nonetheless, the pace at which the number of Dito subscribers increases has already been “surprising” according to chief technology officer Rodolfo Santiago.
“We’re very aggressive in opening up add cities and municipalities. The potential subscriber base will increase as we expand our coverage. Judging from the three-month experience, if we sustain that pace of getting subscribers, it’ll be an amazing subscriber growth,” said Santiago.
The budding telco is already close to reaching one million subscribers, which is exceptional given that its services are only currently available to 37% of the country. No to mention the fact that this all occurred during the pandemic.
“We’ve done it during the time of Covid, lockdown—just to be able to build our network, do the launch, and hit 1 million subscribers in three months,” said Dito chief administrative officer Adel Tamano.
So far, only 123 areas in the Philippines are able to use Dito. The company hopes to expand its coverage to at least 51% of the population by the end of the year. However, Santiago noted that building Dito’s network in Metro Manila has proven to be challenging.
“There are areas even in the commercial areas already that would have some gaps,” explained Santiago. “We really wanted to fast-track and cover the whole of Metro Manila. But there are some restrictions that we are subjected to that we cannot do anything unless we are permitted.”
