Severe Tropical Storm Kristine has severely impacted livelihoods in the Calabarzon and Bicol regions, displacing over 251,000 workers, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Affected areas include Batangas, Quezon, Laguna, Albay, and Camarines Sur and Norte.
DOLE Undersecretary Benjo Benavidez reported that the agency is focusing relief efforts through its TUPAD (Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers) program, providing cash-for-work emergency employment. This program has already supported more than 83,000 workers in Bicol, offering immediate financial assistance to those affected.
In addition to TUPAD, DOLE is offering livelihood grants of at least P50,000 to families interested in starting their own businesses. Eligible applicants must submit a project proposal for review to receive assistance.
The recent impacts of Tropical Storm Kristine, compounded by Typhoon Leon, have affected 7 million people across 17 regions, with 333,951 people currently sheltering in evacuation centers. The death toll has reached 145, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
