On Monday, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) expressed that they have completed approximately 497 kilometers of bike lanes and signage in key areas across Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao. The department has invested ₱1.09 billion in this project so far as part of the Bayanihan Bike Lane Networks Project.
Along with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), at least 313 km of pavement markings have been accomplished by the DOTr in NCR. In Cebu, 29 km of markings, separators, and signages have been established. The same elements have been put up along 55 km of road in Davao.
“It is in fulfilling the desire of the public, and commuters, the Department of Transportation has been implementing projects geared towards that end,” affirmed Transportation Secretary Art Tugade.
“We intend to provide commuters with access to faster, and efficient means of mass transportation; and to open infrastructure for active transportation such as walking and cycling,” he explained further.
Under Republic Act. No. 11494 or the Bayanihan to Recover as One, bicycles have been recognized as a viable mode of transportation. Over the past year, biking has experienced a sudden boom as a lot of professionals resorted to it as their primary means of getting to work.
Various biker groups have earlier expressed their concerns regarding the severe lack of facilities and safety measures in place, particularly along major roadways. Since then, the government has allocated funding to “support the establishment of bike lane networks,” according to the DOTr.
